The Salem High girls had quite an experience in Dublin last week when they went to Pulaski County High School for a tennis match. The match was postponed due to someone in town shooting at cars.
“We began with doubles and all three doubles played one game when the Assistant Principal of Pulaski came out and told us that a shooter was near the campus and we need to go to the gym for a lock down,” said Salem coach Mike Gibson. “So both teams went to the gym along with the Pulaski County volleyball team that was in the gym doing conditioning.
“I told our girls to call their parents but not to tell them to worry, we were safe and it was a precaution that we had to go through,” Gibson continued. “I kept an open line to (Salem Principal)Scott Habeeb, (Athletic Director)Chris King and Dr. Forest Jones to let them know how things were going. The shooter was this young man who was shooting at cars outside of his house. The police were called and then the man fled and was believed to be dangerous. He was spotted a couple streets from Pulaski County High School.”
The match was not continued and the Salem girls boarded the bus and headed home. It was rescheduled for Wednesday.
“The Pulaski staff was excellent and they kept everyone informed,” said Gibson. “Later that evening Pulaski County police caught the shooter.”
On Friday Salem’s boys and girls took on Patrick Henry. The girls lost, 9-0, at the Salem Civic Center as the SHS courts are currently under repair. The boys lost at PH, 6-3.
