The top four volleyball teams in the River Ridge District will compete in a tournament next week, beginning at the sites of the top two seeds on Monday. Only the top four teams in the RRD make the tournament.
The River Ridge is one of the toughest district’s you’ll find. Coming into this week Christiansburg was undefeated in RRD play and considered the state favorite in Class 3. Hidden Valley, the defending Class 3 champion, was 8-3 with one match to play. Christiansburg and Hidden Valley will be the top two seeds and have home tournament games on Monday.
Patrick Henry and Blacksburg will be the third and fourth seeds while Salem, Cave Spring and Pulaski County are already eliminated. Christiansburg will host Blacksburg on Monday and Patrick Henry will go to Hidden Valley. The district tournament championship will be at the site of the highest remaining seed next Wednesday, October 29.
Salem was in the running to make the tournament until a loss to Patrick Henry on Tuesday, dropping the Spartans to 12-7 overall and 4-7 in the district. The Pats beat Salem 25-19, 26-24 and 25-19 for Salem’s fifth straight loss. Kourtney Goens had seven kills and four blocks, Parker Price had seven kills and Bailey Redford had six.
The Spartans lost to Christiansburg in Salem last Thursday in three sets, 25-13, 25-19 and 25-14. Goens had eight kills and two blocks, Emme Custer had five kills and Redford had four.
“Tough match with the number one team in all divisions in the state,” said Salem coach Doug Eller.
The Spartans will conclude the regular season at home against Pulaski County tonight.
