Voters in the City of Salem went to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 4, to take part in Virginia’s 2025 General Election, deciding contests for statewide, legislative, and local offices.
Polling places across Salem will be opened from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. Voters selected candidates for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, and the 40th District seat in the Virginia House of Delegates, along with several local constitutional offices.
On the statewide ballot, Democrat Abigail D. Spanberger and Republican Winsome Earle-Sears are seeking the governorship. For lieutenant governor, the candidates are Ghazala F. Hashmi, Democrat, and John J. Reid II, Republican. The race for attorney general features Jay C. Jones (D) and Jason S. Miyares (R).
In the House of Delegates 40th District race, voters will choose between Donna M. Littlepage, Democrat, and incumbent Joseph P. “Joe” McNamara, Republican.
Locally, four Salem constitutional offices appear on the ballot, each with a single candidate listed: Matthew J. Pollard for commonwealth’s attorney, Christopher G. “Chris” Shelor for sheriff, Kristie D. Chittum for commissioner of the revenue, and Danielle C. Crawford for treasurer. Each race also included a write-in option.
Voter turnout in Salem was reported at 52%, with 9,404 ballots cast out of 17,979 registered voters.
In the governor’s race, Spanberger received 43.64% of the vote in Salem and 57.24% statewide, while Earle-Sears took 56.04%locally and 43.56% statewide.
For lieutenant governor, Hashmi earned 41.79% in Salem and 55.32% across Virginia, compared with Reid, who received 57.99% locally and 44.42% statewide.
In the attorney general contest, Jones received 38.92% in Salem and 52.82% statewide, while Miyares garnered 60.64% locally and 46.78% across Virginia.
In the 40th District House of Delegates race, Littlepage received 41.39% of the vote in Salem and 46.70% districtwide, while McNamara won 58.53% locally and 53.11% across the district.
Local results showed Pollard receiving 98.71% of the vote for commonwealth’s attorney, Shelor 98.61% for sheriff, Chittum 99.05% for commissioner of revenue, and Crawford 98.90% for treasurer.
Percentages have been reported as of press time Wednesday morning. Election results will be certified later this month by the Virginia State Board of Elections.
