Princeton Miles of the Salem-Abbott 10U football team breaks free for a touchdown run in last Saturday's Sandlot Super B
Princeton Miles of the Salem-Abbott 10U football team breaks free for a touchdown run in last Saturday’s Sandlot Super Bowl playoff game at Bogle Field.

The Sandlot Super Bowl football tournaments continue this Saturday with quarterfinal games at Bogle Field and Hickam Field in Roanoke County and Cy Dillon Stadium at Franklin County High School. Opening round games were played at Bogle Field, behind Cave Spring Middle School, last Saturday.

Quarterfinals will be played for 8U, 10U and 12U teams. In the 8U class In the 8U class, four games will be played will be played at Bogle Field. Botetourt-Divers is the top seed and will play at 12:45 p.m. against North Roanoke, a 6-0 winner over Salem-Kesler last Saturday. Other quarterfinal games match Franklin County against Cave Spring at 9 a.m., Glenvar-Hudson against Vinton-Saunders at 10:15 a.m. and Salem-Chaney against Vinton-Havens at 11:30 a.m..

The Salem-Chaney team is playing for a special memory this year. Walter Moyer, who was a standout player for Salem sandlot teams the past several years, passed away in July at just 12 years old. There was an issue with the sedation during a trip to the dentist, and Walter was admitted to Carilion Pediatric ICU by ambulance but never recovered.

Walter was a special boy. He was diagnosed as autistic when he was two years old and medical professionals didn’t believe he would ever walk, talk or reach typical milestones. However, he overcame those obstacles and was looking forward to playing sports for Andrew Lewis Middle School this summer when he tragically passed.

The boys on the Salem team are wearing stickers on their helmets this year in memory of Walter.

Four 10U quarterfinals are scheduled for Franklin County this Saturday, beginning with Cave Spring against Salem-Dyer at 9 a.m.. Top-seeded North Roanoke and Franklin County will play at 10:15 a.m. followed by Botetourt-Phillips, the second seed, against Salem-Abbott at 11:30 am. Salem defeated Glenvar-Fridley, 16-0, in an opening round game last Saturday.

The final 10U game of the day in Rocky Mount will be at 12:45 p.m. with sixth-seed Botetourt-Gusler taking on third-seed Glenvar-Edmonds. The Botetourt-Gusler team opened with a 38-0 win over Franklin County-Angle at Bogle Field last Saturday.

Three 12U quarterfinals will be played on Northside High’s Jim Hickam Field this Saturday, beginning with a 9 am game between fourth-seeded Botetourt-Howery and fifth-seeded Franklin County. At 10:15 a.m. Cave Spring will take on North Roanoke and at 11:30 a.m. Salem-Jones will play Vinton. Salem is the second seed and Vinton is seventh.

All semifinals are scheduled for Oct. 24 at various locations and Sandlot Super Bowl championship games in all three divisions will be at Salem Stadium on Nov. 7.
