If you missed some high school games in last week’s football contest, that’s on you. Most of the high school games were moved from Friday to Thursday last week to avoid impending bad weather, and that made it easy to pick the winners when our deadline is listed at 5 pm Friday.
I don’t think it mattered a whole lot, as last week’s high school games were first round playoff games and they’re usually mismatches anyway. And, with Betty Schultz on a role, no one was going to beat her.
Schultz, of Craig Avenue in Salem, missed just one game in the whole contest. In fact, she was perfect on the first 14 games of the contest before picking the Raiders to beat the Colts in the late game Sunday. No one else did as well so Betty gets the $50 gift certificate from Mac & Bob’s and the Blizzard from Dairy Queen in Salem.
For last week’s 19th hole question I asked you to tell me what you’d do with money if you won the two billion dollar lottery, which no one in the Salem area did by the way. I don’t think some of you realize how much an NFL football team costs these days as Tyler Coe said he’d buy the Panthers and many others said they’d buy the Redskins/Commanders. Wayne Dillman said he’d even move them to Salem and change the name to Virginia Spartans.
Well, if Daniel Snyder does indeed sell the Washington football team the price the Commanders are valued at is somewhere in the neighborhood of 5.6 billion dollars, and that was before they beat the Eagles Monday. Granted I don’t live in that neighborhood, but even if I won that lottery and took the one-time payout I’d still be close to five billion dollars short of being able to buy the Commanders. I haven’t made that much money in my 48 years at the paper combined!!
It was tough to pick a winner because I got some good answers. Gary Sovine said he would give all the Salem High coaches raises and Robert Almond said he would pay UVA coach Tony Elliott 20 million to go back to Clemson. I decided to pick Kevin Floyd, who said he’d make some improvements to Salem Stadium so we could get a big time college bowl game here. I think that would be cool, so Kevin will get a free round of golf, with cart, at the Salem Municipal Course.
Next week is Thanksgiving, so for this week’s 19th hole tell me what you have to be thankful for. It can be sports related or not, funny or not, and my favorite answer will get a free round of golf.
AND, since we have early deadlines for our Thanksgiving issue, I won’t be able to announce our winner next week. We’ll have another contest next week, and I’ll announce winners for this week and next in the December 1 issue. –Brian Hoffman
