The Salem High boys’ lacrosse team will open state play at home this Friday with a game against Broad Run. Face off time is 7 pm at Spartan Field.

Salem smothered Jefferson Forest on Thursday of last week, 14-3, to earn a home game in the state quarterfinal. Broad Run defeated Loudoun County, 11-6, to punch their ticket to Salem with a 12-5 overall record.

“I’ve been watching some film on them and they look like a very talented team,”‘ said Salem coach George Revercomb. “We’re going to have to continue to play our best ball to advance. After losing in the state-quarterfinals at home last season the boys are very hungry to come out and play better this year.”

The Spartans were at the top of their game against Jefferson Forest last week. The Cavaliers finished 16-0 in games other than Salem but the Spartans beat them twice, 14-7 and 14-3.

In last Thursday’s game the Cavs scored the first goal of the game but that only made the Spartans mad. Salem scored the last four goals of the first period and led 8-2 at the half. The Spartans kept the pressure on after intermission, outscoring the Cavs 6-1 in the second half and shutting them out in the fourth quarter.

Salem got three goals each from Parker Dallas and Holden Custer. Ty Hicklin and Wade Marble had two each and also scoring were Logan Sparks, Oliver Farber, Brayden Hall and Ryan Warren. Jackson Wininger had three assists, Dallas and Jackson Jones had two each, Richard Hof had five saves in the crease and Warren won 12 of 18 faceoffs for Salem.

“We loved having all of the Salem youth players at the game, and the atmosphere the community created made a huge difference,” said Revercomb. “Really happy with the way we are playing right now.”

With the win Salem is now 14-3 and two of the losses were to talented private school teams. Friday’s winner will advance to the state semifinal next Tuesday at the home of the higher rated team.

“Our seniors have done a great job down the stretch with their leadership,” said Revercomb. “We know we have to have a great week of practice heading into Friday, and I think the team is very focused on doing the little things right.”

“Really excited to host a home state quarterfinal game Friday. We won the Tommy Girani Cup against North Cross, the Region Championship last week, and our final goal is to win the first State Championship for Salem Lacrosse.”
