The Salem Red Sox were tied for first place in the Carolina League Northern Division as they set off on a six game road trip Tuesday. Salem will play three games at Frederick and three at Potomac before returning home to host Winston-Salem and Lynchburg in a seven-game homestand beginning Monday night.
Salem was tied with Potomac in a tight Northern Division race through Tuesday’s action. The Sox and Nationals both had 15-10 records at the top of the division.
The Sox opened their current road trip with a 5-2 win in Frederick Tuesday. Salem took a lead before making an out and never looked back, riding a season-best three homers at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick. Kyri Washington, Santiago Espinal and Roldani Baldwin all homered for the Sox in the win.
Salem starter Hernandez surrendered two runs on four hits and four walks while whiffing four in four innings. Daniel Gonzalez was terrific in picking up his fourth win without a loss, allowing just one walk and three hits over three shutout frames while striking out four. Matthew Gorst dominated Frederick batters, fanning five and allowing just one hit in two innings for his third save.
