The Salem School Board recognized two standout Salem High School golfers Tuesday, Nov. 11 for their achievements during the fall season.
Junior Ashnoor Kaur was honored for winning the VHSL Class 4 State Championship at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg on Oct. 14. Kaur shot a 1-over-par 71 to top a field of 60 of the top male and female golfers in her classification. This marks the second consecutive year a Salem student has claimed the Class 4 title; current Vanderbilt University freshman Kathryn Ha won last year.
Kaur finished the season with an average score under par, highlighted by a 66 (-5) at Botetourt Golf Club. She was named First Team All-River Ridge District, First Team All-Region 4D, First Team All-State, and junior girls’ player of the year. She also earned a place on the Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame girls’ team. Kaur captured four individual tournament wins and placed in the top six in every event she entered.
Freshman McKenzie Eversole was also recognized for her performance at the VHSL Girls State Open at Heritage Oaks on Oct. 27, where she finished in the top 25 competing against golfers from all six VHSL classifications. The week before, she had earned first place as the top qualifier from the Roanoke area zone. Eversole recorded a season-low 73 at Hunting Hills Country Club and placed in the top 15 in the competitive River Ridge District. She earned Honorable Mention All-River Ridge District honors, was named to the Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame girls’ team, and recorded five top-10 finishes, including one win and three top-5 finishes.
The school board praised both athletes not only for their accomplishments on the course but also for their performance in the classroom and their character off the course.
