The Salem High boys’ indoor track team finished third in the state Class 4 meet thanks to some great performances from a group of Spartan sprinters. The Blacksburg boys and Western Albemarle girls took team titles at the meet, held at Liberty University in Lynchburg last week.
Blacksburg scored 64 points to win the boys’ meet, followed by Deep Creek with 44.5 and Salem close behind with 40 points. Salem won two state champi- onships as junior Peyton Lewis won the 55m dash and
the 4×200 relay team also finished first.
The relay team consisted of Jonathan Vernon,
Josiah Persinger, DaRon Wilson and Lewis and they ran a time of 1:28.16 for a new Class 4 state record. Salem beat second place Deep Creek by over two seconds as the Hornets ran a time of 1:30.22.
Lewis, who is a junior, and sophomore Persinger finished one-two in the 55 meter dash. Peyton tied the VHSL state record with a time of 6.37 and Persinger was close behind at 6.49.
Lewis also took fourth in the 300m dash at 35.25. The Spartans took fifth and sixth in the 55m hurdles with Christopher Cole placing fourth in 7.79 and Wilson sixth in 7.87.
