The Salem and Glenvar golf teams had a busy week on the links last week with a local tournament and a district match.
Both teams participated in the annual Bob McLelland Metro tournament last week. The first round was held at a tough Hunting Hills course and the second round was at Blue Hills. Salem was fourth and Glenvar was 13th as most of the Roanoke Valley schools participated.
Hidden Valley won the tournament with a two-day score of 604, just one stroke better than Blacksburg. Hidden Valley led 308-310 after one round. The Bruins shaved one stroke off the margin at Blue Hills with a 295 to Hidden Valley’s 296 as the Titans held on to win the team trophy.
Salem shot 325 at Hunting Hills and 324 at Blue Hills for a two day total of 649. Glenvar carded 484 and 439 for 923.
“We had three in the 70s on Thursday, so that shows our potential,” said Salem coach Thad Snyder.
Salem’s best finish in the Metro was a 148 by senior Brian Hutton, who finished fourth individually. He was consistent with a 74 on both days to finish five strokes behind the medalist, Bryce Corkery of William Byrd, who came on strong Thursday with a 69 to finish at 143. Ross Funderburke of Hidden Valley was second at 145 and Ben Carroll, who shot 71 at Hunting Hills to take the first day lead, finished third at 147.
“Brian is such a great kid,” said Snyder of Hutton. “He works very hard and he very likeable.”
Salem’s next best finisher was senior Garrison Conner, who shot 78 and 84 for 162. Daniel Poff carded 88 and 79 for 167 and Johnny Danstrom had 86 and 93 for 179.
Glenvar’s best score was Eddie Ball at 220. Trip Adams, Tyler Smith and Jake Skelton rounded out Glenvar’s scoring.
Both teams were back in action Monday with district matches. Salem was at Hunting Hills, where the Spartans finished third behind Hidden Valley and Blacksburg. Hidden Valley won with a team score of 295 and Salem had 323.
Conner led Salem with a 74, followed by Poff at 82. Hutton had 83 and Danstrom had 84 for the Spartans.
Salem is back in action Monday at Auburn Hills. Christiansburg will host that round of River Ridge District play.
Glenvar was at Hanging Rock to take on James River and Alleghany Monday. River easily won the day with a 330. Alleghany was next at 416 and Glenvar had 452. Adams led the Highlanders with a 107.
Glenvar is back in action today at Giles, and Monday the Highlanders travel to Alleghany.
