
The Salem High volleyball team will be looking to snap a three game losing streak tonight but it won’t be easy. The Spartans will go from the frying pan into the fire when they host Christiansburg.
The Blue Demons are one of the top teams in the state, regardless of classification. They come into the week at 17-0, including two wins over defending Class 3 state champion Hidden Valley, one in four sets and one in three. The Blue Demons were 8-0 in the River Ridge District prior to Tuesday’s match with Cave Spring.
Salem is 4-5 in the tough River Ridge and 12-5 overall after falling to Hidden Valley on the road Tuesday. It was the third loss in a row for the Spartans, who started the season 10-0 before getting into the meat of a rugged RRD schedule.
Last Thursday in Blackburg the Bruins evened the season series with Salem with a four set win, 25-21, 19-25, 25-14 and 25-18. Gabby Crawley had nine kills and four blocks for the Spartans while Emme Custer had nine and three and Kourtne Goens had five kills and two blocks.
On Tuesday at the Spartans got off to a great start with a 26-24 win in the first set. However, Hidden Valley bounced back to win the next three and take the match, 25-14, 25-21 and 25-15. Custer had six kills and four blocks, Bailey Redford had nine kills and Goens had five kills and two blocks.
Next week the Spartans have two home matches, Patrick Henry on Tuesday and Pulaski County a week from tonight.
