Salem High School will be the site high school American Conference lacrosse semifinals on Saturday, as both the girls and boys play at Spartan Field.
The girls are the second seed and will host a 9 am game against third seeded Cave Spring. Hidden Valley is the top seed, and the Titans will play the winner of a 4-5 game between Blacksburg and Christiansburg at 11 am at Bogle Field.
The Salem boys are the top seed, and they’ll play the winner of a 4-5 Blacksburg-Christiansburg game at 11 am Saturday morning at Spartan Field. Hidden Valley is the second seed, and the Titans will host Cave Spring at Bogle Field at 1 pm.
Championship games are scheduled for Tuesday. If the Spartans are still involved, as expected, Salem will host that game at 6 pm.
Hidden Valley will host the girls’ championship on Tuesday, also at 6 pm. There’s an excellent chance that will be a rematch of Monday’s Salem-Hidden Valley game, won by the Titans at Hidden Valley, 12-11. That win gave the Titans the number one seed for the conference tournament.
Salem’s loss at Hidden Valley Monday was the first of the season for the Spartans, who were 13-0 to that point. Hidden Valley scored with 17 seconds left in the game for the win.
“While it would have been ideal to have a perfect 14-0 season, now that we’re in the playoffs it’s all a clean slate we need to make sure we take our time with each game and play to our full potential,” said Salem coach Maggi Pace.
Salem trailed Hidden Valley 8-3 on Monday before rallying in the second half to tie the game at 11-11, only to lose on the late goal by the Titans. Kara Yates had three goals, Madi Caldwell had five assists and Amber Wright and Libby Bowman had two goals each.
The girls also played Cave Spring last Friday and took a 19-2 win over the Knights. Lilly Blair scored 10 goals for the Spartans, giving her an even 300 for her career at the end of that game.
Salem’s boys also played Cave Spring and took a 16-11 win for Senior Night, and senior Evan McMillan had five goals. Wyatt Whitlow had three and two assists and Zach Mason went two and two.
On Monday the boys improved to 9-4-1 with a 12-8 win at Hidden Valley behind five goals by Mason. McMillan and Burks Chisom had two each.
“We played a solid game on both offense and defense against Hidden Valley,” said Salem coach Daniel Dyer. “We had a lot of guys step up and play at a high level when needed. Michael Rock did well on faceoffs and Burks Chisom scored two big goals. It was good to see us play as a team. We have to continue to make strides as playoffs begin. I look forward to see how we compete the rest of the season. “
