State Swim meets are at Richmond pool this week

Glenvar boys are region champs

The SwimRVA facility in Richmond will be site of Virginia High School League state swim meets this week and both Glenvar and Salem High students will be competing. The Class 1 and 2 meets, including Glenvar, were scheduled for Wednesday and the Class 4 meet with Salem swimmers is scheduled for Friday.

Salem qualified six individuals and two relay teams for the Class 4 meet when the boys took fourth and the girls were 11th in Region 4D meet at Liberty University on February 7th. Glenvar competed in the Region 1C/2C meet at the Hargrave Military Academy pool in Chatham last week and had a big day as the boys won the region championship and the girls finished sixth.

The Highland boys finished with 121.5 points to win the meet, securing the crown with dominant relay performances and strong scoring depth across the meet. Glenvar swept all three boys relays as Avery Thompson, Landon Cairns, Aspen Thompson and Brendan Miller won the 200 medley relay, Avery Thompson, Aspen Thompson, Miller and Landon Cairns took first in the 200 free-style relay and the 400 freestyle relay team of Avery Thompson, Bentley Crowe, Aspen Thompson and Cairns closed the meet with another victory. All three relay teams had previously qualified for the state championship earlier in the season.

Individually, many Highlanders placed in the top eight and scored valuable team points. Brendan Miller placed second in both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Cooper Ermel finished second in the 200 freestyle and added another top-eight fin-ish in the 100 butterfly. Darren Delby scored in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Grayson Shearer placed in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly while Nikita Larin scored in the 500 freestyle and tied for fourth in the 100 breaststroke. Mason Young added points in both the 200 IM and 500 freestyle. Bentley Crowe scored in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle and Lincoln Boren added points in the 100 breaststroke.

For the girls the 200 medley relay team of Sophie Childers, Chloe Childers, Macy McMahon and Evelyn Gard placed fifth. The 200 freestyle relay team of Sophie Childers, Evelyn Gard, Chloe Childers and McMahon placed sixth and the 400 freestyle relay team of Sophie Childers, Gard, Lila Nicely and McMahon fin-ished third, earning an automatic state qualification.

Individually, McMahon placed second in the 100 freestyle while Chloe Childers scored in the 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Sophie Childers placed in the 200 freestyle, Lila Nicely scored in the 100 backstroke and Addi Cockram added points in the 100 butterfly.

“Our boys team is looking to carry momentum from the region meet to the state meet while the girls are looking to better last year’s finish at states,” said coach Shannon Hall. “It should be fun.”
