It’s the most wonderful time of the year. No it’s not Christmas, it’s football season.
We had high school games and a few college games last weekend. We have high school games and a full slate of college games this week. AND, just a week from today the NFL begins. Yes, it truly is the most wonderful time of the year.
And you know what happens when football season comes? Yes, it means I sit in front of the TV and correct football contests every Monday night from now until Christmas. But that’s okay, I’m not selling car warranties over the phone, it’s football and I LOVE football.
If you look on the facing page, and you can’t miss it, you’ll see the first week of our weekly football contest, which has been running since my first football season here in 1974. The rules are explained on the entry blank and make sure you get it to the Salem Times-Register office at 1633 West Main Street before 5 pm on Fridays, or at least get it in the mail by that time.
Once again our weekly prize is a $50 gift certificate from Mac & Bob’s Restaurant in Salem as well as a Blizzard from Dairy Queen. We’re hoping to have a weekly prize for a question I ask each week, but we’re still trying to nail down a sponsor for that, and wouldn’t a Hardware Store be a great place to nail one down?
We have several blanks on the contest still available, so if you want to help sponsor our contest and advertise your business this would be a great place to do so. Everyone who enters the contest has to look at your advertisement every week of the entire football season to make their pick. No fast-forwarding or skimming over the advertisement, as the game in question is somewhat hidden in the box and you have to look at it every week. If you’re interested in a great way to promote your business call Randy Thompson here at the ST-R office at 389-9355 and we’ll hook you right up.
With that said, good luck on the season. Each week you’ll find the contest story near the artist’s rendering of “Eddie, Jr.,” the quarterback with the Salem dove on the front of his jersey. You’ll find a story announcing the previous week’s winner and some nuggets for the coming week. It’s all included for just a dollar, which is the cost of the Salem Times-Register newspaper. It’s cheaper than the cheap hamburger at a fast food drive thru and tastes about the same, plus you get to read all the great stories about your local kids and athletes.
It all starts this week. And remember, Christmas comes but once a year but football is here until February. –Brian Hoffman
