The Salem Parks and Recreation Department announced last week a new location and a new name for its popular summertime movies series. Starting this June, Movies In The Park will take place at Salem’s historic Kiwanis Park, which is located on the corner of Florida and 6th Streets. The venue has been hosting sports and entertainment events in Salem since it opened in 1932.
“We are excited to begin this movie series at Kiwanis Park in 2024 for many reasons,” said John Shaner, Salem parks and recreation director. “Most notably, we can now control the flow of attendees in and out of the facility and ensure that this remains a first-class, family-friendly event for all.”
On Friday, June 14, the free monthly entertainment begins with the Disney animated picture “The Super Mario Brothers Movie”. This is an adventure-filled animated movie starring the voice of Chris Platt and Charlies Day as Mario and Luigi. Gates will open at 7 p.m. and the movie will begin at dusk, around 8:30 p.m. As always, admission is absolutely free for all ages.
This year’s other movies for the summer of 2024 include – “Barbie” on June 28, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” on July 26 and “Sonic The Hedgehog 2” on August 9.
These Friday night events, sponsored by InFirst Federal Credit Union, are designed for the entire family to enjoy a free night at the movies under the stars, so everyone is welcome to bring chairs and a blanket. Refreshments will be available at the Kiwanis Park concession stands.
Please remember that pets are not allowed at these events. For additional information, please call Salem Parks and Recreation at 375-3057.
