The first scrimmages of the fall sports season will be held this week as high school teams prepare for their first fall seasons since 2019. Last year’s fall season was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic and played on a limited schedule in the late winter and early spring.
The first football scrimmages will be Friday, and both Salem and Glenvar are at home. Salem will scrimmage Brookville at Salem Stadium at 6 pm and Glenvar will host William Byrd at Highlander Stadium at 6:30 pm. Glenvar’s scrimmage was originally scheduled for 5 pm but moved back an hour and a half when Byrd could not get a bus to get the team here in time.
Salem’s second scrimmage will be a Benefit Game against Magna Vista on Friday, August 20, at Salem Stadium at 7 pm. The Spartans will open on August 27 at home against Martinsburg of West Virginia.
Glenvar’s second scrimmage is scheduled for August 20 as well, and it’s a jamboree with Blacksburg and Abingdon participating. The Highlanders open at home against Galax on August 27.
The Glenvar volleyball team will scrimmage Lord Botetourt at GHS tonight, with the jayvees at 5:30 pm and the varsity at 7 pm. The Highlanders will host Salem for their second scrimmage next Tuesday, August 17, before opening at home with Auburn on Monday, August 23.
Salem will participate in the Rockbridge Jamboree at Rockbridge High School on August 21 in an event that will include over 20 schools. The Spartans open the season August 25 against Roanoke Catholic.
Andrew Lewis Middle School will host a football jamboree today with Patrick Henry, William Fleming and William Byrd participating. That’s scheduled to begin at 5 pm at Salem Stadium. The Wolverines open at William Fleming on Thursday, August 19.
The Lewis volleyball team played in a jamboree at Read Mountain Middle School on Wednesday and will open August 19 at home against Floyd County.
The high school golf season is already underway and the cross country teams won’t take the gun until September.
