Find out about a project to provide additional capacity and improve safety by
widening nine miles of Interstate 81 from two lanes to three lanes in both directions
between exit 128 and exit 137 in Montgomery County and Roanoke County.
The project includes replacing seven pairs of bridges, installing concrete barrier wall
in narrow median sections and constructing sound walls in some locations. Ramps
will be improved at exit 128 (Ironto), at exit 132 (Dixie Caverns) and at the Ironto Rest
Area. This project will involve a change and/or break in limited access.
Temporary signals will be installed to control traffic during construction at the
intersection of Route 647 (Dow Hollow Road) and Route 11/460 and on the ramps to
and from Route 603 (North Fork Road) at exit 128.
The hearing will be held in an “open-house” format and VDOT representatives will be
