20 teams, 260+ walking in Friday’s Relay for Life at Daleville TC

Twenty teams and 264 participants were already registered earlier in the week for the Botetourt Relay for Life that will be held this Friday, May 19 at Daleville Town Center. Relay for Life is an annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society (ACS), and this year’s event theme is “Star Light, Star Bright, Wish Upon the Cure Tonight.”

Relay for Life teams will start setting up at 2 p.m. and the event kicks off at 5 p.m. with a Zumbathon. The opening ceremony is at 6 p.m., which will be followed by the Survivors and Care Givers Laps.

The Relay continues through the evening until the 11 p.m. closing.

There will be Disney-related activities throughout the night a children’s Disney Character parade with registration beginning at 7:15 p.m.

The Luminaria ceremony honoring survivors and remembering those lost to cancer starts at 8:30 p.m. Luminarias are available for purchase at event.

There will be food, games and raffles going on throughout the event

According to the Relay website, participants have already raised over $47,000, with a goal to raise $55,000.

Earlier in the week, Team Altec was leading the team fundraising with $10,700.

Lord Botetourt High School’s team was right behind with $10,124.

Mark Out Cancer (St. Mark’s United Methodist Church) Team had raised $6,661, and Nellie Ward’s Cookin’ Up a Cure team had raised $3,550. The Bank of Fincastle Team had raised $2,210, The Holy Strollers had raised $2,120, New River Electric Team had raised $2,054, Banking on a Cure Rising Star Team had raised $1,415 and Mill Creek Mighty Movers Rising Star Team had raised $1,002.

Individually, earlier in the week, Sarah Thompson on Team Altec had raised $7,100, Candace Underwood on the Lord Botetourt High School Team had raised $2,862, Barbara Wiley on Mark Out Cancer had raised $1,814, Michele Keil on New River Electric had raised, $1,252, Debbie Bowling on the Holy Strollers had raised $1,173, Nancy Womack on Mark Out Cancer had raised $1,048, and Nellie Ward on Cookin Up A Cure and Beverly Cole on Banking on a Cure Team had raised $1,000 each.
