Seventh graders in Mrs. Cynthia Bowen’s English class at Andrew Lewis Middle School experienced carrying gallon jugs of water outside to attempt to realize what it’s like for young people in developing countries late last month. “We have been reading Linda Sue Park’s ‘A Long Walk to Water’ in class,” Bowen explained. “It is a dual narrative based on the true story of one of the Lost Boys of Sudan, Salva Dut. The second story features Nya who makes two trips to the pond—walking a mile barefoot each way—twice a day to bring water to her family for drinking and cooking.”
