The Andrew Lewis Middle School football teams opened the season last week and both the eighth graders and seventh graders scored impressive wins over Patrick Henry. The eighth grade team won 30-0 and the seventh graders won 38-8 in a doubleheader at Salem Stadium.
The Wolverine eighth grade defense was outstanding against a talented Patrick Henry squad filled with team speed. Performing well for the Lewis defense was Graham Pollard, Landynn Booth, Junior Crawford, Mayson Henderson, C.J. Goens and Tyrstan Gaines.
The Andrew Lewis offense was also clicking, putting up 22 points in the first half. The first touchdown was a 60-yard pass from quarterback Maclin Hale to Aaron Brower and the two point pass from Hale to Mayson Henderson made it 8-0 Wolverines.
Hale and Brower would connect on another long touchdown pass for a touchdown while fullbacks Pollard and Crawford pushed in two other scores to make the final score 30-0. The offensive line of Michael Lewis, Ian Crouch, Cam Martin, Grayson Lavinder and Kaden Hughes blocked well against a physical Patriot defense.
“A highlight for the offense was possessing the football the entire third quarter, rushing the football every snap and scoring,” said coach Brian Hooker.
The seventh graders opened the doubleheader and set the tone for the evening. The defense played a solid, physical game, creating big plays and coming away with an interception that was returned for a touchdown. The defense’s ability to limit Patrick Henry’s scoring opportunities helped set the tone for the Wolverines throughout the game.
Special teams also made a major impact, with Andrew Lewis recovering two onside kicks and giving the offense additional opportunities to attack.
Offensively, the Wolverines controlled the game on the ground, scoring five rushing touchdowns. The consistent running attack, combined with strong play from the defense and special teams, allowed Andrew Lewis to pull away.
“The team showed toughness, discipline, and a willingness to make plays in every phase of the game,” said coach Corbitt Hairston. “A strong way to begin the season.”
Today the Lewis eighth graders will be at Bogle Field in south Roanoke County to take on Cave Spring Middle. The seventh graders will host Glenvar next Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Salem Stadium at 5 p.m..
