The Glenvar Middle School football team picked up its first win of the season when the Highlanders defeated Floyd County, 12-8, at Highlander Stadium last week.
Glenvar struck first to take a 6-0 lead on a touchdown by Ryland Franklin. The Highlanders made it 12-0 on a touchdown by Kendrix Thompson at the half.
Floyd battled back in the second half, scoring a touchdown and successful two-point conversion to cut Glenvar’s lead to 12-8. However, the Glenvar defense held strong down the stretch, preventing Floyd County from completing the comeback as Glenvar held on for the win. Everett Creasey had an interception for the Highlanders.
“The win was a total team effort,” said coach Raysean Priest. “They showed toughness and determination against a strong Floyd County squad.”
The Highlanders were scheduled to play the Andrew Lewis seventh grade team on Wednesday at Salem Stadium. Next Monday, Glenvar is back home to take on the Read Mountain B team.
