The Department of Veterans Affairs has awarded more than $28.2 million in grants to 17 community organizations to help Veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless in Virginia during fiscal year 2027.

The funding is part of a record $1.17 billion in grants awarded to 680 organizations nationwide to address Veteran homelessness. The grants follow the VA’s efforts to house 51,936 homeless Veterans in fiscal year 2025, the highest number in seven years.

Resource and supportive services grants will be distributed through the VA’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families program.

The funding will help prevent the imminent loss of housing, identify more suitable housing for Veterans and their families, and rapidly rehouse Veterans who are homeless or at risk of remaining homeless without assistance. will be distributed through the VA’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families program. The funding will help prevent the imminent loss of housing, identify more suitable housing for Veterans and their families, and rapidly rehouse Veterans who are homeless or at risk of remaining homeless without assistance.

Additional funding for transitional housing and intensive supportive services will be distributed through the VA’s Grant and Per Diem program. The grants will support transitional housing, service centers and transition-in-place housing, which allows Veterans to remain in their current housing while receiving services to help them move toward permanent, stable housing.

The program also provides special housing designed to better serve women Veterans and Veterans who are chronically mentally ill, frail or elderly.

“We remain committed to ensuring Veterans across Southwest Virginia have a safe, stable place to call home – with access to supportive services through our VA, and via collaborations with local community organizations,” said Tammy Snyder, executive director of the Salem VA Health Care System.

“These grants strengthen our local partnerships, allowing us to meet Southwest Virginia Veterans exactly where they are with the housing and support they deserve. Every Veteran deserves a safe, peaceful place to call home, surrounded by a community that honors their service,” Snyder said.
