When he was first appointed to the Salem Board of Zoning Appeals, Van Gresham had no idea how long he would be serving the people of Salem.
He retired Sept. 24 after serving on the board for 50 years.
That board meets the fourth Wednesday on an as-needed basis to review cases citizens are appealing.
“I can’t remember any controversial situation that wasn’t resolved,” Gresham said. “It all just boils down to common sense.”
As far as advice he would give future BZA members, he added, “Just put yourself in that person’s shoes. As long as it’s reasonable it’s good to make those decisions.”
He said to the citizens of Salem, “If I were standing in front of all the citizens, I would encourage them to consider what is best for all the city.”
Other members of the Board of Zoning Appeals are Chair Thomas Copenhaver, Vice Chair Steven Belanger and members Gary Eanes and Zoller. Tony Rippee is the alternate member.
