The Salem High girls will be at Hidden Valley Friday looking for a Three Rivers District win. The Spartans are 2-12 after dropping a 62-34 decision to a strong Christiansburg team in Salem on Tuesday night.

Scoring points has been tough for the Spartans in recent games. Salem scored just 31 points on Monday in a loss to William Byrd.

“That’s been a big obstacle for us,” said Spartan coach Corbitt Hairston. “We play so hard on the defensive end, but on the other end the shots just aren’t falling. We go three and four minute periods without scoring, and it’s tough to win like that.”

On Monday at home the Spartans fell to Byrd, 52-31. Salem trailed 25-13 at the half and was outscored in all four quarters. Maddie Hall led the Spartans with seven points and Alla Daniel, Azyah Burnette and Kendra Bolen had four each. Bolen also had nine rebounds, and she’s had at least nine in each of the past four games, including 14 against Pulaski and 12 against Patrick Henry in back-to-back games last week.

The Spartans have had a busy schedule due to the inclement weather. They played at Pulaski last Thursday, in a game rescheduled from Tuesday, and lost 45-39. Salem had the lead late in the game but couldn’t hold on.

On Friday at home the Spartans were no match for PH, falling 79-42. Bolen had 15 points to go with her dozen boards in that one.

“We’re trying hard to get back in the win column,” said Hairston. “We play at Blacksburg on Tuesday and they beat us the first time on a last second shot. Hopefully we can turn that around.”
