The Salem High soccer girls avenged one of their three losses on the season when they defeated Blacksburg, 2-1, in overtime Tuesday night in Blacksburg. Salem scored a late regulation goal, then followed it up with a goal in the final minute of overtime.
Salem trailed 1-0 at the half after missing several opportunities. Things looked bleak with time winding down, but with less than a minute to go Ellie Laub found the corner from 20 yards out to tie the score and send the game into overtime. Salem then won the game in the final minute of OT when Mallory Edwards found Sheby Marlman for the winner.
“It was a good win for us, but we outshot them 16-4 and almost lost,” said Salem coach Josh Jones. “That would have been very disappointing, especially after outshooting them the first time we played and losing 1-0. We didn’t execute early in the game.”
With the win Salem improved to 10-3-1 on the season. The Spartans were at Pulaski Monday and little trouble running over the Cougars, taking an 8-0 win in 60 minutes. Marlman had three goals for Salem, Lily Barnes had two and Evyn Magenbauer, Sarah Mowbray and Abby Mason had one each. Laub had three assists.
Last Friday at Hidden Valley the girls pulled out a 2-1 win with another late goal. Once again the Spartans fell behind as the Titans scored in the first minute. Salem tied it when Mason knocked home Magenbauer’s corner kick and it was 1-1 at the half.
That was how it stood until just under four minutes to go. Magenbauer scored the game winner off an assist from Mariana Schreuders.
“It’s good practice to play from behind, but we don’t want to be behind anymore,” said Jones. “I just want the girls to play their best.”
Salem is back in action tonight with a game at Cave Spring.
