The Roanoke College women came up one win short of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference basketball championship last week, falling to the University of Lynchburg in the championship game. The Maroons lost 67-61 in Lynchburg.
Despite the loss the Maroons’ season was a big success with an overall record of 10-3, playing without fans and with games cancelled on short notice due to the coronavirus pandemic. Lynchburg finished the season 11-1 but also saw the season come to an end as there is no NCAA tournament in Division III this season.
The Maroons had their chances. Trailing by two at the break, Roanoke tied the game going into the fourth quarter and held a one-point lead late, but the Hornets would close the game on a 10-3 run to claim the title.
Rose Sande paced RC with 15 points while JaBryah Haverkamp added 14, both off the bench. Whitney Hopson had nine points and five rebounds and Renee Alquiza scored eight.
When the ODAC All-Tournament team was announced, Sande and Haverkamp represented the Maroons on the six-player squad.
