The Salem Red Sox will continue their 12 game road trip this week when they play six games in Lynchburg. The Sox played six in Fredricksburg last week and went just two of six games against the Nationals, who have the second worst record in the 12 team Low-A East League.
Despite dropping four of six in Fredricksburg the Sox held on to their lead in the North Division of Low-A East, leading by four games over second place Delmarva. As of Monday they remained a game behind Carolina in the overall standings as they try to catch the Mudcats for second in Low-A East and earn a spot in the post-season playoffs.
Carolina lost four of six to Down East last week, so Salem missed out on an opportunity to pass the Mudcats. This week Carolina will host Augusta, the last place team in the South Division.
Salem lost the opener in Fredricksburg, 7-6. The Sox bounced back to win the second game, 9-4, but the Nationals won Thursday, 5-1, and Friday’s game was rained out. After splitting a doubleheader Saturday the Sox dropped Sunday’s series finale, 4-0. Salem was also shut out in the opening game of Saturday’s doubleheader, 12-0.
Salem is now in Lynchburg through Sunday before returning home next Tuesday, August 24, to host Delmarva for a six game series.
