The Salem and Glenvar football teams will have their final tune-ups before the regular season begins as they host home events this Friday. Salem will have a Benefit Game against Magna Vista while Glenvar will host a three team jamboree featuring Blacksburg and Abingdon.

Salem’s Benefit Game at Salem Stadium will begin at 7 pm and admission will be charged. A third of the money will go to each school and the final third will go to the Virginia High School League. The contest will be played like a regular game except for special teams play.

The Spartans had their first scrimmage at home last Friday against Brookville. The scrimmage was delayed for about an hour and half due to a thunderstorm but the teams were able to finish.

“I saw some good things,” said Salem coach Don Holter. “We gave up a few scores but the only people who keep score in scrimmages are the people who play Salem. It’s nothing we can’t correct, and the kids were flying around.

“As for the offense, I thought we got after people up front and were able to extend our drives. We got in our own way a few teams, but again it’s nothing we can’t fix.”

Glenvar scrimmaged William Byrd at Highlander Stadium last Friday. Like Salem, the scrimmage was delayed for about an hour and half before the two county teams were able to get on the field. Glenvar scored once and Byrd did not score.

“I thought our kids really competed,” said Glenvar coach Kevin Clifford. “They scored once and we kept them from scoring, so that was pretty successful. And everyone got to play.”

The Highlanders will have a three-team jamboree this Friday, beginning with Glenvar against Abingdon at 5 pm. Blacksburg will play Abingdon after that, and the night will conclude with Glenvar against Blacksburg.

Both teams will open on Friday, August 27, at home. Salem will host Martinsburg while Glenvar will entertain Galax.
