The Glenvar girls will head into Region 2C play with a 13-0 record while the boys are on a high after knocking Radford from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Last Thursday the Glenvar boys beat Radford, 5-4, to give the Bobcats their first loss of the season. Alec Mcilwain, Blaine Bishop, Ian Kelley, Elliot Kelley and Garrison Franco all got wins against the team that will be the top seed in the region.
“I was proud of how well we played and kept the momentum going after a rain delay and venue change,” said Glenvar coach Robert Haynie.
The two were scheduled to play again at Glenvar on Wednesday, and Glenvar will open Region 2C play at home either Thursday or Friday of this week. If the Highlanders win their region opener they will play at Virginia Tech on Monday at 10 am against either Radford or Grayson County. Region C is single elimination with the top two teams advancing to state.
The girls remained undefeated with a 5-4 win over Floyd last week. Isabella Gustafson, Avery Flynn, Hannah Hylton and Natalie McMahon all won singles matches and the team of McMahon and Dhruvi Patel put it away with an 8-0 win at number three doubles.
“It was a hard-fought match, but we came out victorious,” said coach Blaine Mills. “I’m proud of the team for stepping up and not giving up as things started looking bad in the match.”
Glenvar also beat Radford by forfeit last week as the Bobcats didn’t have enough players for a match. The Highlanders will open region play next Monday, May 23, at Virginia Tech.
