The Andrew Lewis Middle School eighth grade football team will be looking for their third straight undefeated season when the Wolverines play at Pulaski Middle today at 5 pm.
The Wolverines come into the game with a 37 game winning streak going back to the 2018 season. They lost to Franklin County in their August season opener that year, then won their next nine games. In 2019 they were 10-0 and in 2020 there was no middle school football due to the coronavirus pandemic. Last year Lewis was 9-0 and this year the Wolverines have won all nine of their games to date with one to go. If they can pull it off this would be the seventh undefeated season for coach Brian Hooker, who has been assisted by Anton Jones and Jason Staples during the current winning streak.
Last week Lewis had little trouble at Merrill Gainer Field in Roanoke as they shut out Patrick Henry, 38-0. On the offensive side Tanner Overstreet threw touchdown passes to Kyshead Arrington and Joseph Henderson while fullback Henderson ran a dive in for another. On the defensive side Von Jones intercepted a pass and ran it bafor a touchdown while Jordan McCadden scooped a Patriot fumble and ran it for another score.
The seventh grade team lost to the Altavista Middle Colonels 30-0 last Thursday. On Monday the team played the Squires of Cave Spring Middle winning 35-12 boosting the 7th grade team record to 6-5 to finish the 2022 season.
