Long before the Railyard Dawgs, there was ice hockey in Salem! The then brand-new Salem Civic Center was home to the Salem Rebels ice hockey team which played in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Rebels were a popular franchise of the Eastern Hockey League. The Salem Museum has this hockey stick on display, signed by the members of the 1969-70 team. Signatures to look for include Dave “The Hammer” Schultz who went on to a stellar career in the National Hockey League, and Claude Piche, who later operated Piche’s, a popular pizza place on Brandon Avenue. You can see this hockey stick and lots of other sports memorabilia at the Salem Museum, 801 East Main Street. The Salem Museum is open Tuesdays-Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and admission is free.
