The Glenvar boys will be in Floyd County this Friday for a big Three Rivers District basketball game against the host Buffaloes. It will be a doubleheader with the girls, with the varsity boys’ game scheduled to begin around 7:45 pm.
Floyd came into the week at 8-3 after hosting their annual Chance Harman Classic on Friday and Saturday of last week, a two-day, 14 game annual event that includes many of the top teams in the area. The host Buffaloes played Union High and took a 61-50 win in the event.
Meanwhile, Glenvar was busy as well with three games in the span of six days against some strong competition. It started with a 63-56 loss at James River last Thursday in a Three Rivers District game. The Highlanders jumped to an 18-1 lead at the outset but the Knights never gave up and tied the game at 43-43 after three quarters, then played strong down the stretch to grab the win.
“We made several tough basketball decisions on both sides of the ball down the stretch and it cost us the game,” said Glenvar coach Cliff Bordewisch. Gabe Ford led Glenvar with a dozen points and Lawson Simmons had 10. The Highlanders didn’t have much time to pout over the tough loss as they were right back in action a night later at Hidden Valley and dropped a 56-49 decision to the Titans. This one was tied at halftime but the host team prevailed in the second half to split the season series.
“Hidden Valley looked much better than they had at home and played up to the moment,” said Bordewisch. “We never could find an offensive groove and continued to be inconsistent on both ends. Our team continued to settle offensively and play without energy on the defensive end.” Ty Bolling scored 14 to lead the Highlanders but he was the only double digit scorer for Glenvar.
On Tuesday the Highlanders improved to 8-5 as Ford hit a three-pointer at the end of overtime for a 57-54 win over Alleghany. Gabe hit a long three with a hand in his face for a stunning win at GHS. Once again, the Highlanders let an early lead slip away. Glenvar led 14-4 after the first quarter, 27-12 at the half and 39-26 after three before the Mountaineers rallied to tie the game in regulation. Ford led Glenvar with 16 points and Dawyot had 11. “We had 15 turnovers in the second half and we just can’t do that,” said Bordewisch.
