The Salem High soccer boys will put their undefeated record on the line Friday when they host Blacksburg in a big River Ridge District soccer game. Salem comes in at 4-0 and the Bruins opened the week at 5-0.
The Spartans had a long string of losses to Blacksburg before beating the Bruins in the district championship game last year. Salem is out to prove that wasn’t a one time affair, and Blacksburg is bound to be looking for revenge.
“I’m sure they’ll be excited to play us,” said Salem coach Dave Atkins.
The Spartans remained undefeated with a 5-1 win at Cave Spring Tuesday. Logan Lavinder had two goals and two assists, Elijah Clark had two goals and one assist, Anthony Rugama had two assists and Tyler Gillinger had a goal.
Last Friday at Spartan Field the Salemites beat a game Lord Botetourt team in overtime, 2-1. The Cavaliers took an early lead on a header and that held until about 10 minutes remained in regulation when Rugama scored with an assist from Lavinder. Logan then scored an unassisted goal three minutes into the first OT after LB didn’t get a good clearance on a cornerkick by Clark. Ronald Cortez-Hernandez had four saves in the net.
