The Salem High girls and boys lacrosse teams traveled across the valley to Vinton last Thursday and didn’t have much luck. The girls lost to host William Byrd for the first time ever and the boys had their game suspended after one quarter of play.
Byrd’s girls played their best game of the season in beating Salem, 9-6, on Vinton’s Highfill Field. The game was tied 3-3 after the first quarter with Byrd taking a 7-5 lead at the half. Salem cut the lead to 7-6 in the third quarter but couldn’t catch the Terriers, who improved to 8-4 while Salem fell to 6-5.
Mia Potter led the Spartans with two goals. Bailey Redford kept the Spartans close with eight saves between the pipes to go with two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
The boys took the field for the second game of the doubleheader under dark skies and got in one quarter before the stadium was cleared due to lightning. Salem held a 3-1 lead at that point and the game was scheduled to be resumed on Wednesday of this week.
Both teams were also weathered out of games with Blacksburg Monday. The boys will make theirs up at home on May 22nd at Spartan Field while the girls were scheduled to go to Blacksburg on Wednesday of this week.
Tonight the girls will host E.C. Glass and next Monday, May 19, both teams play Franklin County with the girls at home and the boys in Rocky Mount.
