The Glenvar High tennis teams will take on Alleghany this Friday, weather permitting. The Highlanders had matches with Floyd postponed on Monday of this week and rescheduled for May 22.
The Glenvar boys are 7-4 after splitting with Northside and Radford last week. Glenvar beat Northside, 8-1, then lost to Radford 5-4 in a match that came down to a tie breaker. Glenvar was missing some players.
“We play them next week in our last regular season match and hopefully with our full lineup,” said Glenvar coach Bob Haynie. “We’ve had two winnable matches against undefeated teams that were suspended due to rain with us leading or tied, and it’s tough to win against the best teams without a full lineup. Hopefully, we will be firing on all cylinders by Regions starting on May 26th. I’ve learned over the years that you need to be not only good, but also a little lucky this time of year to be great.”
The girls beat Northside 8-1 with singles wins by Riley Price, Shawna Garwood, Rebecca Magruder, Karis Gillespie and Rayah Kelley. Doubles winners were: Garwood/Magruder, Price/Gillespie and Priya Patel/Julia Carroll.
The GHS girls lost to Radford 8-1 with Garwood as the lone victor. The Highlanders are now 6-5 and stand third in Region 2C.
Glenvar needs to resume a match that was postponed due to rain in Carroll County when the Highlanders were leading five of the six singles matches that were started. They have three matches next week to finish the regular season.
