The Glenvar High baseball team is headed to Ringgold today to open Region 2C tournament play. The Highlanders are scheduled to face Dan River at 5:30 pm.

Dan River is the fourth seed in the eight-team tournament while Glenvar comes in as the fifth seed. The Highlanders are 9-11 overall after opening the season 0-6. They’ve been on the verge of climbing back to .500 several times but haven’t quite been able to get there. Coach Jeremy Cromer hopes to do that in the post-season.

“Last year Dan River came here for a region game with a 9-11 record and they beat us and went on to the state semifinal,” said Cromer. “I feel like we have the pitching to go far if we hit the ball like I know we can.”

The Highlanders split two games to end the regular season last week. On Wednesday they hosted James River and dropped a 10-3 decision that might have cost them a first round region home game. The Highlanders beat the Knights the first time around, 7-1 in Buchanan, but this time it was all River as the visitors scored 10 runs on just six hits while taking advantage of four Glenvar errors. Six of River’s 10 runs were unearned.

On Friday the Highlanders bounced back with a 5-3 win at Floyd County in nine innings. Glenvar was down 3-0 after six innings but freshman Cam Feazell blasted a three-run homer in the top of the seventh to tie the game. Feazell then singled in Jack Osburn, who had walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, for what proved to be the winning run in the top of the ninth. Rhett Henderson knocked in an insurance run and Gray Hutchison closed out the game on the mound for the win. Hutchison pitched two no-hit innings after Cale Vaughan pitched the first seven.

If Glenvar can win today the Highlanders would advance to the region semifinals next week. The semifinals and finals will be played at Ferrum College.
