Salem athletes will compete in state Class 4 meet at Liberty

Liberty University will be the site of the Virginia High School League Class 4 state track meet this weekend. Both the Class 3 and 4 meets will be held at the Lynchburg school on Friday and Saturday.

Salem will be well-represented after a strong showing in the Region 4D meet at Millbrook High School in Winchester last week. The Salem boys finished third and the girls were 10th among 15 schools with Blacksburg, a River Ridge District rival of the Spartans, sweeping both team titles.

In the boys region meet Mitchell Taylor had a big day, sweeping both hurdle races. Mitchell ran a time of 14.72 to win the 110 hurdles and a time of 39.86 to take the 300 meter hurdles. DaVon Jones was fourth in the 110s and sixth in the 300 hurdles.

Coen Logan took two seconds in the sprints. He ran a time of 10.91 in the 100 meters and 22.39 in the 200. Justice English was fourth in the 100 and sixth in the 200 while Aedon Wiley was fifth in the 200 race. In the 4×100 relay the Salem team took fourth with the foursome of English, Wiley, Kyshead Arrington and Logan. The 4×800 relay was fifth with Grant Horner, Isaac Snow, Thomas Scharp and John Stovall.

In the field events Dontay Davis won the discus with a toss of 143’5”. Dontay was fourth in the shot put.

In the girls’ meet Salem’s 4×400 relay team took third place with Addy Funk, Erin Armistead, Audrey Harmon and Maekayla Scott. The 4×800 team was fourth with Fun, Addison Hancock, Harmon and Caroline Huff.

Alecia Kasey was seventh in the shot put and eight places went to Harmon in the 400 and Funk in the 800.

The top four in each event advances to the state meet this weekend.
