The Glenvar High softball team saw their season come to an end one win shy of a trip to the state tournament. Glenvar dropped a 3-2 decision to Appomattox at the Botetourt Sports Complex Tuesday night in the Region 2C semifinal.
Glenvar had a 2-1 lead after three and a half innings but Appomattox, the home team in Daleville, scored two unearned runs when runners got on base on a hit-by-pitch and a walk. The next batter hit a ball that scored two on a fielding error, making the score 3-2 and that’s how the game ended.
Zella Hayes was three-for-three for the Highlanders, including a lead-off home run. Hannah Street and Abby Teubert each added one hit and accounted for all five of Glenvar’s hits in the game. Street and Teubert shared time on the mound allowing six hits.
“We had the game in our hands and let it slip away,” said Glenvar coach Lonnie Raines. “We had four errors and those proved to be costly. This was a great game overall and we have played them tougher than any other team this season, so we are all extremely proud of that.
Glenvar finished the season 15-8 and Appomattox advances to tonight’s championship game at the Botetourt Complex with a 20-3 record.
Last Thursday at Glenvar the Highlanders opened Region 2C play with a 9-4 win over James River, their third win over the Three Rivers District arch-rival Knights in the span of 11 days.
As was the case the last time they played, River took an early lead before the Highlanders rallied for the win. Down 2-0 after three and a half innings Glenvar took advantage of a two-out error by the River shortstop to open the floodgates to a big inning. One run scored on the error and Hayes followed with a three-run homer to put the Highlanders up 4-2. Audrey Moles then singled and scored on a double by Teubert and when the dust cleared Glenvar led 5-2, all on unearned runs.
In the fifth inning, with two outs, Glenvar added four more runs. Chloe Maxey and Hayden Hartz both walked and Kyleigh Luck, who pinch ran for Maxey, stole third and scored on a throwing error. Hayes was walked and Moles doubled, scoring Hartz. Teubert singled, scoring Hayes and Moles for a 9-2 lead after five innings. James River added two in the seventh before Street relieved Teubert in the circle to put the game away.
Teubert led Glenvar with three hits and three RBIs. Hayes had two hits and three RBIs and Moles and Haley Leginus each added two hits. Teubert picked up the win, the third time she beat a solid James River team.
When the All-Three Rivers District team was announced three Highlanders made the first team, Teubert in the outfield and Street and Hayes as “at large.” Moles and Leginus were Honorable Mention.
“We should still be in this thing,” said Raines. “The girls worked their butts off this season and earned everything they got. They were fun to coach and we had a good time together.”
