Roanoke County Public Library is inviting local artists of all ages to submit original designs for a community-wide mural contest. Selected entries will inspire public art installations at three county library locations.
The contest is open to residents of Roanoke County and runs through Aug. 30. Participants may submit one entry each using traditional art mediums; digital or AI-generated designs are not allowed. Entries can be submitted in person at any Roanoke County Public Library location or online at rocolibrary.org.
Categories and prizes include:
- Kids (12 and under): Winning designs will inspire a storm drain mural at the Vinton Library, painted by a local professional muralist. Entries should focus on nature, animals, or protecting waterways from stormwater pollution.
- Teens (13–17): Winning entries will inspire a storm drain mural at the South County Library, also painted by a local muralist. Themes may include rain, rivers, forests, or wildlife, highlighting the importance of protecting local waterways.
- Adults (18+): The winning adult submission will be used in collaboration with muralist Jon Murrill to create a vibrant exterior wall mural at the Bent Mountain Library. Designs should emphasize the scenic beauty of Bent Mountain, the joy of reading, or the role of libraries and education in the community.
“This contest is a chance for the community to contribute bold, colorful, and inspiring public art,” library officials said.
