Hank Takes It to the Bank

The results are in from the first football contest of the season and it was a doozy. The winner was decided by the high point total in a razor thin finish.

Hank Ebert prevailed among a bunch of folks who missed two games. For all intents and purposes it was a one-loss competition as EVERYONE in the contest but one person picked Salem to beat E.C. Glass. Kevin Floyd of Roanoke was the only one to pick the Hilltoppers and he missed three others so he was out of the running.

With that in mind, everyone else in the contest had one loss after the first game on the entry blank. Ebert’s only other loss was picking Notre Dame over Miami and he was the closest to Glenvar’s 70 points against Galax so he gets the first $50 gift certificate of the season from Mac & Bob’s.

For the “19th Hole” question last week I asked you to predict the score of the Ohio State-Texas game. Boy were our readers off on that one! Almost everyone picked a high scoring game and a majority had Texas winning. When Ohio State won 14-7 the closest to that was a tie between Darryl Manns and Connie Webb. Manns had the Buckeyes winning 23-21 and Connie had OSU 27-17, both off by a total of 23 points. Both will get a free day of golf at the Salem Municipal Course.

This week is Virginia Tech’s home opener, as the Hokies host Vanderbilt under the lights on Saturday night. Give me your prediction for that game, write it in the space provided and the winner will be teeing off on Academy Street. –Brian Hoffman
