The Salem School Board on Sept. 9 recognized three Salem High School students for their participation in Virginia’s Summer Residential Governor’s School programs.
Bella Poarch attended the Virginia Governor’s World Language Academy for German at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, where she spent three weeks immersed in German language and culture. The academy requires students to exclusively speak, read, write and listen in the target language.
Vivienne Eaton took part in the Governor’s School for Mathematics, Science and Technology at the University of Lynchburg. The program offers high school juniors and seniors an advanced curriculum in STEM fields through hands-on research, small-group instruction and field studies.
Chloe Underwood attended the Governor’s School for Humanities at Radford University, which gives students a college-level experience in the arts and humanities. Participants live in residence halls, work with faculty mentors and develop portfolios and résumés showcasing their work.
Board members commended the students for their achievements and the initiative required to be selected for the competitive programs.
