September Adult Events at the Salem Library

Thursday, September 18, 6pm. The Beauty of Autumn: Seed Collection and Fall Garden Care, Hosted by Roanoke Region Chapter of Wild Ones.  Fall is a wonderful time to collect seeds and prepare your native plant garden for winter. Master Gardener Sharon Burnham, President of the Roanoke Region Chapter of Wild Ones, will give an overview of seed collection methods and preservation, along with the best practices for trees, shrubs, and perennials to help them – and the insects we love – have a successful winter.  Register at salemva.libcal.com or call Salem Public Library (540-375-3089) to register.

Thursday, September 25, 6:30pm.  End of the World Book Club (Horror/Sci-Fi) Theme for this month: Creepy Clowns, Dolls, and Puppets.   Each month the group read books with a different theme and discuss over hot drinks; registration is not required. Themes are announced in advance, with example titles given, but you can read any book that fits the theme.

Friday, September 26, 11am-4pm.  Red Cross Blood Drive at Salem Library.  Make an appointment at www.redcrossblood.org .

Open to grades 1-5; must be at least 6 years old to attend. Registration guarantees you a spot in the program, not a specific start time.  Students will read one-on-one with a dog on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Register at salemva.libcal.com

Friday, September 19, 3:30pm: Middle School Graphic Novel Workshop & Book Club Pick-up.  Bring a concept or story, and we will help you make it into the beginning stages of a graphic novel (drafting and simple illustrations). While we may not finish an entire story, our staff will help you navigate how to start a graphic novel and work on more at home. Open to grades 6-8. Please note, this will also serve as a book pick up for our October Middle School Graphic Novel Book Club. We will be reading Misfit Mansion by Davault. Drop-in or work throughout the hour!  Register at salemva.libcal.com
