The Glenvar football team welcomed Martinsville into the Three Rivers District with a 42-0 shutout win at the “Dog Pound” last Friday. With the win the Highlanders remained undefeated at 5-0 with a home game against Carroll County this week.
“I thought our kids played hard, winning is hard on the road,” said Glenvar coach Kevin Clifford. “I was pleased with our physicality. They have some kids up front who are really good.”
The Highlanders jumped to a 28-0 lead in the first half and never looked back. Glenvar had two scores on the ground, two in the air and two on “pick sixes” as Rawlin Hanks and Jace Forster both had interceptions they returned for touchdowns. Hanks had two interceptions on the night.
Brody Dawyot continued to lead the Glenvar offense with nine completions for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Cooper Mullins had four receptions for 74 yards, Forster had three for 69 and Remington Gordon had three catches for 43 yards.
Ranger Swanson gained 67 yards on just nine carries to lead the rushing attack, scoring twice. Dawyot ran five times for 45 yards.
On defense Cale Vaughan led the Highlanders with 11 tackles. Jake Franklin, playing his first year of football at Glenvar, continued to shine with nine tackles, including a sack. Hanks had nine tackles and a sack to go with his two picks, Dawyot had five tackles and two sacks and Dalton Shoemaker had eight tackles and a sack.
The Highlanders are back home this week to host Carroll County. The Cavaliers have been traditionally bad since Frank Beamer played for Hillsville High many moons ago. They haven’t had a winning season since 2010 except for a 4-2 record in the COVID year but they’re off to a 4-1 start with wins over Christiansburg, Galax, Fort Chiswell and Patrick County. Their lone loss was a 28-14 defeat against Grayson County in the second week of the season.
“They’re much improved,” said Clifford. “They have a good offense and they’re well-coached. We’ll need to play well to beat them.”
