The middle school basketball season opened Monday and both Andrew Lewis and Glenvar Middle boys and girls opened their seasons.
At Andrew Lewis the Wolverine boys pulled out a dramatic 47-43 win over Cave Spring in overtime. The Squires hit a shot with just over four seconds to go in regulation to go up 38-36. Lewis got the ball in quickly and a foul was called on Cave Spring, on the floor, with a second on the clock. After Lewis coach Adam Rutledge called a timeout the ball was inbounded to Aaron Brower, who was able to get a shot off before the horn and it banked in to force overtime. Lewis outscored the Squires 9-5 in the ensuing three minute period to win the game.
Jayden White led Lewis with 16 points and Brower finished with 15, hitting seven of 11 shots from the floor. Eli Blankenship had eight points.
“Wasn’t pretty but proud of how we fought and believed in each other even when it wasn’t going well,” said Rutledge. “We figured out a way to win.”
The Lewis girls’ game at Cave Spring wasn’t as close as the Wolverines took a 56-16 win. Daviah Goodman led Lewis with 18 points and a dozen rebounds while Lilian Richerson had seven points off the bench. Lewis had 11 different girls score.
Glenvar opened the season with a girls-boys doubleheader in Christiansburg. The boys lost 51-34 as Hudson Luton and Bryson Kuzmich scored nine points each and Lane Williamson had seven. Luton also had four rebounds and three assists and Kyptyn Jones dished out three assists.
“It was a tough first game for us, we got off to a slow start and couldn’t recover,” said Glenvar coach Josh Jones. “We have a lot to work on before our next games so hopefully we can improve over the next few practices.”
The Glenvar girls lost 27-22 at Christiansburg. Maudie Doolan had 13 points to lead Glenvar while Abigail Alexander had four.
“You could tell that it was our first game of the season,” said coach Andrew Quillen. “We struggled to get into the flow of the game for the first quarter. We didn’t score any, but by the end of the game we got things going scoring 11 during the fourth quarter. We look forward to playing them again at the end of the season as some of our mistakes are easy fixes.”
The Highlanders are now off until November 5 when both teams go to Floyd. Lewis is back in action today as the girls have their home opener against Read Mountain and the boys are at Read Mountain.
