Fant wins in OT

Last week’s football contest went into overtime before it was decided, and when the dust cleared Don Fant came up the winner.

Fant and several others missed five games last week going into Monday night’s game between the Chargers and Eagles. When the Chargers intercepted a Jalen Hurts pass late in the overtime period to wrap up the game that wrapped it up for Don. So, he gets the $50 gift certificate from Mac & Bob’s.

This was one of the toughest weeks in quite some time. The 15 games were chocked with upsets and many entries had just four or five correct answers. In fact, one contestant who will go unnamed had 12 wrong out of the 15 games. That might be a record.

For last week’s 19th hole question I asked you to predict the score of the Glenvar-Union game. The Class 2 state semifinal ended up 21-20 in Glenvar’s favor and the closest to the actual score was Ron Greer, who picked the Highlanders to win 21-18. Ron is a Glenvar graduate, by the way, and he’ll get a free day of golf at the Salem Municipal Course once the snow melts.

For this week’s 19th hole we’ll stick with the Highlanders. Give me your prediction for the Glenvar-Strasburg championship game this Saturday at Salem Stadium. The closest to the actual score will get free golf.

This game has a special meeting here at the Salem Times-Register. Salem’s Debbie Nixon, our resident graphic artist, is a graduate of Strasburg High and her husband, John Nixon, is from Glenvar. You older folks might remember Johnny from his basketball playing days under Joe Davis in the ‘70s.

This week should be another tough one with all six high school state championship games and two Division III Stagg Bowl hopefuls. Your guess is as good as mine on those games, and if your guess is BETTER than mine you may be eating free at Mac & Bob’s for Christmas.
