No one knew what to expect from the Glenvar basketball team when they opened their season at home against Class 4 Blacksburg last Friday. Last year’s stud, Brody Dawyot, is not playing this year as he’s off to college early for football and other Glenvar football players who also play hoops are practicing for the state semifinal this week.
With that said, few expected Glenvar to beat the Bruins by 30 points. Glenvar created turnovers and hit some threes early to take the lead and rolled to a 73-43 win in the season opener at home.
Glenvar forced Blacksburg into 32 turnovers in the win. Freshman JD Williamson had an awesome debut with 23 points and five rebounds, sophomore Parker Doolan had 13 points and freshman John Deel had 11.
“Good start against a solid Blacksburg group,” said Glenvar coach Hank Luton. “Our goal is to keep getting better. We have a lot to clean up heading into the Christmas break.”
The Highlanders were scheduled to play at Hidden Valley Wednesday but results were too late for publication. Glenvar will return the trip to Blacksburg next Wednesday, December 17.
