Despite the cold weather and a couple late cancellations the Adam Ward Classic basketball event at Salem High School was a big success again. The tournament was one game short but attendance was good and the games were exciting.
The three games Friday night found the Salem jayvees opening with a win over Glenvar. In the second game the Salem girls beat Staunton River, 66-45, and in Friday’s nightcap the Salem boys beat Glenvar, 85-52, in a varsity game.
Saturday’s schedule was originally seven games. Varina dropped out of the event on Wednesday and the Hidden Valley boys jumped into that spot to play Handley. Then, on Friday night, the George Wythe-Radford game for 1:30 pm Saturday was cancelled. It was too late to find a replacement so Saturday’s 10 am game, between Lord Botetourt and Cave Spring was moved to 1:30 pm and the schedule was trimmed from seven to six games, beginning at 11:45 am.
In Saturday’s opener Floyd County defeated Parry McCluer, 70-60, followed by Cave Spring downing Lord Botetourt in overtime, 68-62. The Fleming girls defeated Woodgrove, 58-33, followed by John Handley over Hidden Valley, 66-57, Patrick Henry over Northside, 62-43, and the Fleming boys over North Cross in the finale, 72-69.
“The Adam Ward is a great way to remember Adam,” said Salem High coach Kevin Garst. “It also raises a lot of money for his scholarship fund which gives back to the community. There were a lot of evenly matched and competitive games.”
