The Roanoke College softball team was scheduled to play their home opener Wednesday with York College coming for a doubleheader. The Maroons were 2-4 after splitting a pair of non-conference games Sunday in Washington, D.C., falling to Case Western Reserve, 5-2, before defeating host school Catholic University, 6-2.

Against Case Western Heather McQueeney went three-for-three for RC with a walk and two stolen bases. Mackenzie Samuel worked three innings of relief and allowed just one run.

In the nightcap Baylee Compton threw a complete game for the win, striking out seven Cardinals while allowing just four hits, three walks and one unearned run.

The Maroons struck for two runs in the first inning against Catholic. McQueeney opened with a double, Riley Shupe singled and both came around to score. McQueeney hit a two-run double in the fifth and Shupe followed with an RBI single to push the lead to 5-1. Kiran Kapur brought in another Maroon run in the sixth with a double.

The Maroons were scheduled to play at Mary Washington for two on Tuesday. After Wednesday’s home doubleheader they’re back on the road for two at Mary Washington in Fredricksburg today and two at Southern University in Buena Vista Saturday.
