Roanoke College catcher Danny Ferguson blocks the plate and puts the tag on an Eastern Mennonite runner in Saturday’s first game win.

The Roanoke College baseball team improved to 15-4 on the season and 4-2 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference games after sweeping a doubleheader from Eastern Mennonite University last Saturday. The Maroons won 11-2 and 12-4 in front of a “RidgeYaks FanFest” crowd at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium.

In the opener Chase Booth earned his third win of the season as he threw five scoreless innings with two strikeouts and Riley Fitzgerald went the final four frames for his second save. Jorden Olivera and Noah Donaho topped the squad in hits with three each.

In the nightcap the Maroons struck early, tallying seven runs in the first two innings. Eastern Mennonite got two back in the third before RC added three each in the fourth and fifth to pull away. Both teams rounded out the scoring in the sixth inning with both sides adding two runs in the inning.

Thomas Burgess got his third win of the season, going 5.1 innings and striking out three. Jack Fehlner led all Maroons with three RBIs on two hits while Kyle Tyrrell and Tyler Galloway also had multi-RBI games with two each. Galloway had three hits and Michael Hetzel hit his first career home run in the second inning.

The Maroons have a busy week with games against Averett and Mary Baldwin before heading to Lynchburg Saturday for a noon ODAC doubleheader against the University of Lynchburg.
