
The Roanoke College softball team swept a doubleheader on Saturday, then got swept on Sunday as they finished 2-2 on the weekend. With the results the Maroons are 9-9 overall as they prepare to host two ODAC teams at the James I. Moyer Complex this weekend.
The Maroons were at the complex last Saturday to host the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford and RC swept two, 9-1 and 14-6. Roanoke put together a nine run second inning in the opener and cruised to a big win, highlighted by Ava Colontrelle’s three run double. Riley Shupe, Holly Houchins, Charlotte Gale, Carsyn Michales and Allie Bell all had two hits and Baylee Compton fanned nine in a complete game effort on the mound.
In the second game Roanoke fell behind 5-2 but put four on the board in the bottom of the second and five in the third to take control. Gale was four-for-four at the plate with three runs batted in and Colontrelle was three-for-four with a pair of doubles. Grace Clary picked up the win in relief, pitching three and a third innings without allowing an earned run.
Sunday didn’t go as well as Roanoke dropped two one-run games to the University of Lynchburg, 1-0 and 14-13, in Lynchburg. Both games were decided in extra innings.
Compton pitched the first game and didn’t allow a run through eight innings. The Hornets finally broke through for a 1-0 walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth with an unearned run. The Maroons left 11 runners on base, including three in the seventh.
In the second game the Hornets opened a 6-3 lead heading into the seventh, but RC scored four to go ahead 7-6. Lynchburg then tied the game with a single run in the bottom half of the frame.
Roanoke appeared to be in business when the Maroons opened a six-run lead with six runs in the top of the eighth. However, Lynchburg walked off its second win of the day with seven runs in the bottom of the eighth. Houchins was 3-5 with two doubles and four RBI for RC.
Now 2-2 in the ODAC, this is a big weekend for the Maroons After hosting Virginia Wesleyan University in a 1 pm doubleheader on Saturday the RC women will be back at the Moyer Complex to host Randolph-Macon for two conference games on Sunday, also at 1 pm.
